Choosing a sofa for a small living room
In a small living room, your furniture needs to be thought about a bit more carefully. It usually just means being more deliberate about what you buy, because a sofa that would sit comfortably in a larger space can dominate a smaller one and make everyday life around it feel cramped. Getting the choice right starts well before you look at fabric swatches or scroll through product photos.
Start with the tape measure, not the sofa
Before you fall for a particular style, measure the room properly. Note the full length of the wall you are planning to place the sofa against, the depth available if it needs to sit away from the wall, and how much floor space you need to leave clear for walking around it, opening doors or pulling out drawers nearby. It helps to mark out the sofa footprint on the floor with masking tape so you can see exactly how it will sit in the room before you commit, rather than relying on guesswork once it arrives.
Two-seater or corner sofa: which suits your space?
A two-seater keeps its footprint compact and tends to sit neatly against a single wall, which suits rooms where floor space is the main constraint. A corner sofa can offer more seating for the same or even less overall depth in some layouts, because it wraps into a corner rather than projecting outwards, but it needs a corner it can actually fit into without blocking a door, radiator or window (don’t forget to check the height of the sofa back if it’s going under a window!). If your room is narrow, a two-seater is often the safer choice.
Plan the layout before you buy
Once you know roughly which type of sofa you are choosing, think about how it will sit in the room. Keep at least one clear walking route between the door and the rest of the room and avoid placing a sofa directly in front of a radiator or across a window if it can be helped. In a small room, angling a sofa or floating it away from the wall usually wastes space you cannot afford to lose, so pushing furniture back against the walls and keeping the centre of the room open tends to work better. If the room doubles as a dining space or home office, plan around the other functions too rather than treating the sofa as the only thing that matters.
Top tip: tape out on the floor the dimensions of the sofa so you can see in the room how much space the sofa you’re looking at would take up.
Choose a fabric that suits how the room is used
A hard-wearing weave or a fabric that wipes clean easily is generally a better choice than a delicate one if the room sees daily use from children, pets or visitors. Lighter colours can also help a compact room feel brighter, although this comes down to personal taste as much as practicality.
Check the access before you order
Measure the width of your front door, any internal doorways, hallways and staircases the sofa will need to pass through, and check for tight turns or low ceilings along the route. This matters just as much as the room’s own dimensions, because a sofa that cannot get through the doorway is no use, no matter how well it would have suited the space once inside. If you are at all unsure, the Family Vision team can talk you through what to check before you commit to an order.
Spreading the cost of a new sofa
A new sofa is one of the bigger purchases for a living room, and pay-monthly finance can make it easier to get the right size and style for your space rather than settling for whatever fits your immediate budget. A few things worth keeping in mind:
- Finance costs more overall than paying in cash, so check the total amount payable before you commit.
- Every application is assessed individually and is subject to an affordability check. Approval is never guaranteed.
- Ownership of the sofa does not transfer to you until every payment has been made under a rent-to-own hire purchase agreement.
- If your circumstances change during the agreement, contact the team as early as possible. Support is available.
